Age is the number of complete years, months and days between a date of birth and today, counting a year only once the birthday has passed. Someone born on 15 January 2000 is 26 years, 7 months and 15 days old on 30 August 2026 — 9,724 days, or about 1,389 weeks.
Enter a date of birth to get an exact age in years, months and days, along with the total time lived expressed in months, weeks, days and hours, and the countdown to the next birthday. Leave the second date blank to work from today, or fill it in to find someone’s age on any past or future date. Because the count is calendar-aware, it is also the right tool for the arithmetic behind an adult BMI or TDEE estimate, both of which need an exact age in years.

How exact age is worked out
Age is calculated field by field rather than by dividing a total number of days, because years and months are not fixed lengths.
- Subtract the years. 2026 − 2000 = 26.
- Subtract the months. If the result is negative, add 12 and reduce the year count by one.
- Subtract the days. If the result is negative, borrow the number of days from the preceding month and reduce the month count by one.
That borrowing step is where implementations differ, and it is why two calculators can disagree by a day or two. Month lengths run from 28 to 31 days, so the answer depends on which month you borrow from.
A worked example
Someone born on 15 January 2000, on 30 August 2026:
- Years: 2026 − 2000 = 26
- Months: August (8) − January (1) = 7
- Days: 30 − 15 = 15
No borrowing is needed here, so the age is 26 years, 7 months and 15 days. In total that is 319 months, 1,389 weeks, 9,724 days, or roughly 233,376 hours.
Now move the birth date to 31 January 2000. The day subtraction becomes 30 − 31 = −1, so you borrow from the preceding month — July, with 31 days — giving 30 days, and reduce the month count to 6. The age becomes 26 years, 6 months and 30 days.
Why months are the awkward part
Days and years are well behaved. Months are not, and any age expressed in months carries an unavoidable ambiguity.
Is 31 January to 28 February one month? By the calendar, yes — but it is 28 days, while 1 March to 1 April is also one month and 31 days. There is no way to make both statements consistent, which is why medical and legal contexts that need precision tend to use completed weeks or days instead, particularly for infants.
How long each age is, in other units
The same age expressed in days, weeks, months and hours — useful for milestone birthdays and for sanity-checking a result.

Leap years and 29 February
A leap year adds 29 February to keep the calendar aligned with the solar year, which is about 365.2422 days long. The rule is that a year is a leap year if it divides by 4, except centuries, unless they divide by 400. So 1900 was not a leap year, but 2000 was.
People born on 29 February — sometimes called leaplings — only see their exact birth date every four years. In common years they mark it on 28 February or 1 March, and most legal systems treat one of those as the day they gain a year. The underlying age calculation is unaffected: the number of days lived is the same either way.
Age reckoning is not universal
The system used here is the international one: you are zero at birth and gain a year on each anniversary.
Traditional East Asian reckoning worked differently. A newborn was considered one year old, and everyone gained a year together at the lunar new year rather than on their own birthday. Under that system a baby born shortly before the new year could be considered two years old within days of being born. South Korea, the last country to use it widely in everyday life, aligned with the international system in law in 2023.
Some legal contexts also use “attained age” conventions that differ from the everyday one — insurance policies, for instance, sometimes round to the nearest birthday rather than the last one.
What people use this for
- Eligibility checks — school entry cut-offs, licences, pensions and benefits that depend on age on a specific date rather than today.
- Forms that ask for age in completed years, months or weeks.
- Milestones — the 10,000th day is a genuinely popular thing to mark, and lands a little before the 28th birthday.
- Gaps between people — calculating two ages on the same date gives an exact difference.
- Historical dates — how old someone was when a particular event happened.
Common mistakes
- Dividing total days by 365. This ignores leap days and drifts by about a day every four years — nearly a week over a long life.
- Assuming every month is 30 days. Only four of them are.
- Mixing date formats. 03/04/2026 is 3 April in most of the world and 4 March in the United States. Use an unambiguous format.
- Forgetting that the birthday has not happened yet this year. The year subtraction alone overstates age until the anniversary passes.
- Ignoring time zones for births near midnight, where the recorded local date is what matters.
Frequently asked questions
How is exact age calculated?
Subtract the birth date from the target date field by field – years, then months, then days. Where the day comes out negative, borrow the number of days in the preceding month; where the month comes out negative, borrow twelve months from the year count.
Why can two age calculators disagree by a day?
Because they borrow a different number of days when the day component goes negative. Some use the length of the month before the target date, others the month of birth. Month lengths vary from 28 to 31 days, so the results can differ by one to three days.
How do I calculate age in days?
Take the difference between the two dates in milliseconds and divide by 86,400,000, the number of milliseconds in a day. Someone born on 15 January 2000 had lived 9,724 days by 30 August 2026.
When do people born on 29 February have a birthday?
Their birth date only recurs every four years, so in common years they mark it on either 28 February or 1 March, depending on preference and on local law. Most legal systems treat them as having aged a year on one of those two dates.
Why does the month count feel wrong sometimes?
Because months are not a fixed length. Going from 31 January to 28 February is one month by the calendar but only 28 days, while 1 March to 1 April is one month and 31 days. Any month-based age carries that ambiguity.
Is age counted the same way everywhere?
Not historically. Traditional East Asian reckoning counted a baby as one year old at birth and added a year at the lunar new year rather than on the birthday, so a person could be two by Western reckoning yet three traditionally. South Korea moved to the international system in law in 2023.
Can I work out my age at a past or future date?
Yes. Fill in the second date field with the date you want the age calculated for. Leaving it blank uses today. This is useful for checking eligibility on a specific date, such as a school cut-off or a policy start date.
How many days are there until my next birthday?
The calculator works this out by taking your birth day and month in the current year, rolling forward to next year if that date has already passed, and counting the days between. On the birthday itself it shows zero.
